I recently read a fictional book titled "Jaybird" about a Civil War veteran who was a fifer in the war, and as an old man in the early s, he hit the road with his year old grandson, hopping trains and playing for meal money on the streets of towns in the Mid-West.
Although fictional, one gets the impression that it wasn't all that. The Lacy family came from VA to GA to MS in my branch. I know there are a lot of Lacys in the mid-west.
I wrote a book on the Lacys that went through 3 printings inbased on RevWar, Civil War, Bible, land, cemetery, and personal family recollections of my family members remembered these CSA and War of soldiers and knew many of them well.
